Family and Sexual Violence: Celebrating National Women’s Day

The Family and Sexual Violence Unit in Goroka saysthe number of Sexual violence cases for girls has increased.

 

Sergeant Judy Girua ofthe unit’saidthe offence is often committed by people that are trusted bythe victims.

Peace Park in Goroka was filled with women with a handful of man to withnessthe celebrations. The event organised by Eastern Highlands Family Voice and partners was aimed at stopping violence against women and girls.

 

Guest speaker Sergeant Judy Girua fromthe Provincial Police Family and Sexual Violence Unit’saidthe number of sexual offences against young girls below 18 has increased. She saysthe crimes are committed against young girls by thosethey trust.

 

Sergeant Girua said everyday about 6 cases of sexual violence are reported atthe Family & Sexual Violence Unit. This means bythe end ofthe year,there will be over 2000 plus offences committed against young girls and children. She saidthe organised gthering withthe Theme Protecting Children From Violence is Everyone’s responsibility, creates awareness onthe issue with efforts to endthe social ill inthe community.
