Western Pacific University

Various Bills were presented on the floor of parliament.

They included the Bill to amend the Excise Tariff Act of 1956 and the Bill to amend the Customs Tariff of 1992 by Treasury Minister Patrick Pruaitch.

These Bills are yet to be read for the third time, however, one Bill that the government was able to pass is the establishment of Western Pacific University in Ialibu – Pangia.

Minister for Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology, Malakai Tabar, presented the Bill for the establishment of Western Pacific University on the floor of parliament.

The Bill received overwhelming support from the 71 Members of parliament who voted for the bill. It was passed by an absolute majority of 71 and none against.

Being the brain-child of Prime Minister Peter ‘O&rsquO’Neill, the proposed university will be established in his electorate. A government run institution similar to existing universities but with improved systems to revitalise the Higher Education Sector.

The Western Pacific University brings to seven, the number of universities in Papua New Guinea both government and church – run universities. The government has allocated K80 million for the construction of the university. It will be built at the old Ialibu Airstrip which is a state land.
