Walk of Faith; Congregation Walks from Maopa to Port Moresby

By Delly Waigeno – EM TV, Port Moresby

Over 200 members of a church in the Abau District, of Central Province, have completed a hectic four-days walk-a-thon to raise funds for their church.

The congregation members from the Geo-Rita Memorial United Church walked about 170 kilometres from Maopa Village to Port Moresby.

Such a walk is a first of its kind for the Abau District, and according to a church elder, it has been a good experience.

EMTV caught up with the group this morning as it passed between Gereka and Mauru in the Central Province.

Anyone who’s travelled the Maggi Highway knows that it’s quite a distance between the Nation’s Capital and Maopa Village in the Abau District. On average, it takes three to five hours travel time, by road.

So one can appreciate the effort of this group, 230 in total, made up of the youth and the young at heart. Despite the distance and a few blisters, they still managed to belt out a Peroveta for our cameras.

Church elder and deacon, Gairo Waigeno, said the walk-a-thon is for the Geo-Rita Memorial United Church, Maopa.

Mr Waigeno said the church will also play host to the Circuit Council later in the year. He acknowledged the support of the Government through local Member Sir Puka Temu and Governor Kila Haoda. He also urged more support from the people.

The group saw kind donations on the way, such as that from Veronica Charlie, founder of Women of Hope.

The Geo-Rita Memorial United Church is expected to open this year.
