New Morobe Lands Board Sworn In

The new Morobe Provincial Land Board, was sworn in today to deal with dubious deals that created duplicate land titles.

Lands Minister, Benny Allen revealed today, that policies and systems have been implemented to better management of land titles.

Morobe Governor, Kelly Naru, says disputed titleholders, will give back land for proper screening within the new Provincial Land Board.

This new board sworn in today, will deal with the backlog of duplicated land titles given to parties, who claim ownership to land already owned by the state.

An on-going court battle between members of the old board and the Lands department, delayed the swearing in of the newly elected board in 2012.

Lands Minister, Benny Allen says crook deals have plagued the department, but measures are being taken to minimize the problem of dubious deals, and duplicated land titles.

“The department is now putting all its manual records into a computer whereby, if some try to temper with the records, it will show out on the system,” he says.

It is a new electronic system that will simply sort out records of land titles, and ensure that corrupt deals won’t take place in the future.

To avoid duplications, the National Lands Department won’t give titles to anyone seeking ownership of land in other Provinces at Port Moresby.

It comes after two parties with land titles claimed ownership of this section of the old airport last year, a dispute that ended up in court.

The parties showed land titles obtained in Port Moresby, after bypassing the suspended Provincial lands board, and going straight to National Lands.

During the dispute, allegations of corrupt deals within the Old Provincial Land board and the National Lands department surfaced.

Morobe’s land disputes has irritated Governor, Kelly Naru, who says parties disputing ownership over land portions in Lae, will be screened by the Lands board.
