DWU JOURNALISM STUDENTS SHOWCASE RESEARCH ON CONTEMPORARY PNG ISSUES

Final-year Journalism students at Divine Word University’s Madang Campus have presented their research findings during an Undergraduate Research Poster Presentation.
Held under the theme “Emerging Researchers in Communication and Journalism: Exploring Contemporary PNG Issues,” the event gave students the opportunity to showcase research projects completed during the previous semester. The program was made possible through financial support from Post-Courier and ExxonMobil PNG.
Students presented their work through academic poster displays and engaged directly with academics, industry representatives, fellow students and invited guests. Audience members were encouraged to ask questions and discuss findings, creating an interactive environment.
The engagement was aimed at strengthening students’ communication, critical thinking and presentation skills, while encouraging discussion on issues affecting Papua New Guinea.
Staff and students from other departments also joined the presentation.
Speaking at the event, ExxonMobil PNG National Content Manager Sam Koyama, accompanied by Media and Events Supervisor Melissa Fairi, highlighted the importance of research and responsible journalism.
“Events such as this are important because they provide future journalists with the opportunity to develop their research and communication skills,” Mr Koyama said.
He also stressed the need for accuracy and verification in the media.
“It is equally important for aspiring journalists to ensure that facts are thoroughly checked and verified before stories are disseminated to the public,” he said.
Communication Arts Head of Department Mr. Patrick Matbob congratulated the students for successfully completing and presenting their projects. He also expressed appreciation to Post-Courier and ExxonMobil PNG for their support.
At the conclusion of the program, participating students received certificates in recognition of their research efforts.
DWU says the event highlights its commitment to research and academic excellence, and demonstrates the important role of partnerships between universities, media organizations and industry in preparing future communication professionals to contribute to informed public discourse and national development.
