Two-armed men have been arrested by East Sepik police after they were apprehended on a PMV bus travelling to Maprik last week.
The arrest followed coordinated communication and quick response by police officers in East Sepik.
East Sepik Provincial Police Commander Superintendent Christopher Tamari said police informants reported that the two men were allegedly carrying a homemade firearm and a round of live ammunition.
PPC Tamari confirmed that the two men were persons of interest in relation to alleged robberies along the Sepik Highway. He said members of the public spotted the suspects and quickly reported them to police in Wewak.
Following the report, police officers shared information, including the identity of the PMV bus the suspects were travelling in, through their communication channels.
Police officers from Yangoru responded by setting up a roadblock along the Sepik Highway between Kubalia and Yangoru, where they successfully intercepted the vehicle and arrested the two men.
PPC Tamari said the suspects are currently detained at the Yangoru Police Station and will be charged accordingly.
He commended the quick response of his officers and encouraged the public to continue working closely with police to help protect lives and property.
PPC Tamari said criminal activities along the highway remain a concern, adding that cooperation between the community and police can help prevent further incidents.
