Minister Abel: NSO Response
The legal identity of eighty percent of PNGโs total population remains unregistered. To address this, the Department of National Planning & Monitoring and National Statistical Office (NSO) are working together to implement PNGโs first National Identity and Card system.ย
Minister Charles Abel questioned the integrity and accuracy of NSO statistics and how it is affecting the countryโs national development.
ย
He said the NSO is addressing the countryโs outdated statistics through various reforms and initiatives.
ย
Minister Abel said some of these initiatives include changing the head of the NSO Agency, improved efforts in completing the census, along with concluding the household income and expenditure report as the basis of the consumer price index that is used as an inflation measure.

Mr. Abel further mentioned the money the National Government is putting this year towards the business survey, which serves as the foundation for GDP calculations.
ย
IMF is also assisting with a review of the NSO. Another reform is consolidating the civil registry under the NPM and the NSO to provide a larger umbrella organization for statistics and funding of the civil registry through National ID.
