PNG Attends INFOFISH World Trade Tuna Conference And Exhibition

Papua New Guinea, a member of INFOFISH, was represented at the 13th INFOFISH Conference in Thailand this year.

PNG is one of 14 member countries in this intergovernmental organization that provides marketing information and technical advisory services to the fishery industry of the Asia-Pacific region.

A delegation of more than 20 participants from the National Fisheries Authority attended the forum.

The 13th INFOFISH World Trade Tuna Conference and Exhibition was held here at Bangkok’s Shangri La Hotel from the 21st to the 23rd of May.

More than 7 hundred participants from the global Tuna community attended the bi-annual meeting to collectively focus on how the tuna industry is doing and find out what is needed to be done.

Participants included tuna exporters, importers, resource owners, companies involved in the Tuna business, and other interested parties.

Speakers from a cross section of the industry included leaders in international and regional organizations, eco-label certifiers and NGOs, all of whom discussed the tuna supply situation, stock status and management measures.

PNG was once again a key player in this year’s conference, having the largest delegation and an outstanding booth among a total of 40.

PNG’s booth had a display of PNG tuna products, along with fresh tuna to promote the country’s resources.

The PNG delegation was led by NFA Board chairman Job Pomat, and NFA’s Managing Director, John Kasu.

During his opening address, Mr. Kasu pointed out that PNG and other small island nations in the Pacific do not benefit substantially as compared to the tuna resources that are taken from their seas.

Organizer of the meeting, INFOFISH, commended PNG for taking the lead in this global conference.

The organizer said they were expecting a larger number of attendees. However, they believed that the current political situation with the Thai military coup, along with a curfew in the city of Bangkok, had an effect in participants deciding otherwise.

INFOFISH was pleased with the results of the conference, and aims to remain the leading source of marketing support for fish producers and exporters in the Asia-Pacific.
