Port Moresby Water Level Update

By Meleasie Goviro – EMTVNews, Port Moresby

PNG Power has given an update on the Sirinumu Dam’s water level.
The dam has recorded very minimal rainfall over the last week and capacity now sits a little over the halfway mark.

PNG Power urges the people of Port Moresby to continue to manage power and water usage in a conservative manner.

According to PNG Power’s update, 98 mm of rain was recorded in the dam resulting in the steady water level.

As of Monday this week, the water level is at roughly 108 mm3 below full spill level. Meanwhile, the people of Koiari are concerned that the water level is depleting faster than they’ve observed in previous years.

According to Ogi David, the Koiari LLG President, they have come up with an initiative to solve this problem.

They call it the Reforestation Project.

The objective is to rehabilitate the forest and vegetation surrounding the water catchment, in order to improve its capability to hold water.

They are now appealing to the government to support their project to safeguard the livelihood of the people of Koiari, as well as those in Port Moresby who heavily on the dam.
