PNG Reaches Out to Solomon Islands

Prime Minister Peter Oโ€™Neill has expressed his deepest and sincere sympathies to the Prime Minister of Solomon Islands and itsโ€™ people following the flash flooding that caused destruction and deaths last week.

Mr Oโ€™Neill announced the Government will assist Solomon Islands with K1 million for relief assistance towards resettlement, infrastructure repair, and other efforts which have been caused by flash flooding.

Heavy rain and floods have left over 16 dead andย tens of thousands homeless.

The Solomon Islands government declared aย state of emergency last week after the Matanikau River burst its banks, sweeping away people and houses and bringing down bridges.

The floodwaters have receded, but the country is yet to come to terms with the full extent of the damage.ย 

ย 

The concrete bridge, the lifeline that links Henderson with Honiara, has been severely damaged.ย The Solomon Islands seem to be moving from one disaster to the next – be it natural or man-made.ย 

ย 

With the island having a little over 40% literacy rate, education is the key to a brighter future that cannot be compromised.ย 

ย 

Relief shelters have been set up, with many goodwill organisations donating food items and clothing to those displaced in the floods.
