NEW IRELAND DAY CELEBRATES LIFE OF LATE SIR JULIUS CHAN

A celebration of culture, life and the legacy of Sir Julius Chan was held yesterday at Murray Barracks.
Coinciding with the National Remembrance Day, the New Ireland community in Port Moresby gathered in numbers to join the rest of the country in celebrating the event along with the life of late Sir Julius.
The event was spearheaded by the University of Papua New Guinea New Ireland Student Association (UPNG NISA) in collaboration with other New Ireland Students attending various institution in Port Moresby.
UPNG NISA president Mishell Uku said their theme for the event is “Bung Wantaim” or togetherness.
“We chose this day to honour Remembrance Day as well as pay our tribute and honour to our late governor Sir Julius Chan,” Uku said.
“We honour late Sir Julius because he has done so much for our country.”
She said the event is a fundraising event where all the money raised will be put into purchasing laptops, books and other stationary for them to donate to school back in New Irland at end of this year.
“The major project that we will be carrying out back in New Ireland in November, we will be giving out laptops to certain schools as well as talk to students to encourage them in their studies,” Ukus aid.
She thanked the collaborative effort from New Ireland student Associations from the Institute of Business University, Pacific Adventist University, Port Moresby Technical College and Don Bosco Institute.
Uku added that the event also gives the opportunity for the students and participant to have a glimpse of the beautiful New Ireland culture to instill the sense of pride as the country heads into celebrating its 50th Independent Anniversary.
The one-day event not only attracted the people from New Ireland but also the Port Moresby resident who enjoyed the show of spectacle culture form around 10 am in the morning till the afternoon.
