The 51st PNG Medical Symposium ended on a high note today in Port Moresby, concluding the four day event which welcomes hundreds of doctors, medical practitioners and carious stakeholders to the capital.

With a theme of “Advancing Women’s Health Through Innovation” much focus was on strategic approaches to improving health systems, especially women’s health.

In her welcome remarks, Dr Lynda Sirigoi, President of the PNG Women Doctors Association, said the association recognised the significant progress over the past decade that has been made to address women’s health issues.

However, given the current statistics and reports, women’s health issues still need to be prioritised. Presentations covered all areas from women’s cancer, to rural health and many other topics.

Professor Michael Pemezel from the Royal Australia & New Zealand College of Obstetrics & Gynecologists, talked about the importance of continuing professional development. This is to ensure registered doctors remain fit to practice, and to maintain the public’s trust in the medical profession.

The symposium also included presentations from other specialists.

One of the speakers at today’s sessions was Dr Eric Kwa from the Constitutional Law Reform Committee. His presentation of the proposed Women’s Health Protection Bill was of significant interest.

Kwa urged those in the medical profession to encourage the proposed bill into becoming a law.
