Telikom Rolls Out 4G LTE Services in Madang

Today, the maritime township of Madang became the recent township to have residents experience real 3G/4G long term evolution (LTE) with Telikom PNG.

Telikom reported that Madang Residents turned up in numbers at the Telikom Business Office to swap their Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) devices for a 3G/4G handset and went straight into connecting to the internet.

After launching its new Fourth Generation (4G) LTE network in the country late last year, Telikom PNG has now taken to the rural centres and suburbs, with real experiences of the high-speed wireless communication.

According to Telikom, promotional devices earmarked for the swap was scooped during the first half of the day showing how serious people are into grasping this opportunity.

Customers that missed out on the free devices were able to purchase SIM cards at between the price ranges of K5 and K20 with the later SIM starter pack offering 5GB worth of data.

Telikom Business Development Manager, Bill Wartovo, says Telikom commenced the rollout of the 3G/4G service in the last quarter of 2016 having gone LTE live in Port Moresby, Lae, Kerema, Buka and Arawa.

He added that for 2017, Telikom PNG will have rolled out its 3G/4G network to much of the urban centres around the country with Madang first to come online in the New Year.

“We are overwhelmed with the turnout of Madang residents that were eager to connect on our 3G/4G LTE network. The crowd that queued had to be put through the SIM registration process and it was pleasing to note that most customers came forward with valid identification or a guarantor for proof of identity when having their SIMs registered for 3G/4G LTE SIM,” Mr Wartovo remarked.

Mr Wartovo was inspired to hear customers comment on affordable data rates that complimented the data connectivity experience on the 3G/4G service while the call and SMS rates were also competitive.

The Telikom mobile service uses the Rait prepaid card for top-up with reseller opportunities for street vendors and SMEs alike.

From previous announcements, CDMA network second and third Generation (2G/3G) services will be switched off at each location after the new 4G LTE mobile service is switched on.
