PNGDF Responds to East Sepik Eruption

The PNG Defence Force has sent troops to assist those affected in the volcanic eruption in Kadovor, East Sepik Province.

Troops from the Second Royal Pacific Islands Regiment in Wewak have departed by boat to the affected area.

While a chopper from the Air Transport Wing in Port Moresby has arrived in Wewak, for the rescue mission.

Another Naval team from the Basilisk Naval Base in Port Moresby is expected to arrive in Wewak soon.

An estimated 200 soldiers and naval officers are involved in this rescue mission.

Colonel Siale Diro, the head of the PNG DF Force Preparation Unit, says the Defense Force is now preparing other assets to assist with the disaster relief.

About 600 residents of the Kadovor Island have been evacuated from the small island. It is located 22 kilometres from the Sepik River delta.

Samaritan Aviation, the Christian Medical Airline service that serves Sepik river communities were the first to respond to the emergency.
