SMOKE HAZE COVERS PORT MORESBY

Residents of Port Moresby are urged to take care of their health as smoke haze continues to cover the city. The smoke has been visible since 6 am today.

Other parts of Papua New Guinea, including West Sepik and Western provinces, are also experiencing smoky conditions.

Weather Service Deputy Director Kasis Inape earlier confirmed that the smoke was caused by bushfires in Indonesia. The smoke has spread across the region and is affecting parts of Papua New Guinea.

He affirmed that haze can affect air quality and cause health problems, especially for children, elderly people, pregnant women and people with asthma, heart disease or other breathing problems.

Inape said that haze can cause itchy eyes, throat irritation, coughing and difficulty breathing. Staying in smoky air for a long time can also lead to serious health problems.

Residents are advised to limit outdoor activities while the smoke is heavy and avoid hard physical work or exercise outside. People who need to go outdoors should consider wearing a well-fitting mask that can filter fine particles from the air.

Children, elderly people and those with existing health problems should take extra care. Anyone experiencing serious breathing difficulties or chest pain should seek medical help immediately.
