The Papua New Guinea Defense Force (PNGDF) opened its first business arm company today at their headquarters in Port Moresby.
Called the Defense Commercial Incorporated Limited, the company will act as a revenue generator for the PNGDF to sustain its operations.
“The main idea behind raising a Defense Company was to generate revenue from underutilised assets and properties of the PNGDF,” the Chief of the Commercial Support Program Colonel Joe Ben said.
Acting PNGDF Commander Colonel Ray Numa said assets like the PNGDF Engineering battalion will be used in this initiative to generate income.
The company can apply and engage in private or government contracts to carry out constructions, building bridges and other infrastructure developments.
“The company will compete in the open market similar to that of any business operations,” Numa said.
Minister for Defense, Dr Fabian Pok said for years financial constraints have caused the PNGDF a lot of issues.
Pok said this initiative will give the defense force the opportunity to boost their Air, Navy and Land capabilities.
