PM COMMENDS RESEARCH INSTITUTIONS

Prime Minister James Marape said, it is important for Papua New Guinea to develop its own evidence-based data and statistics to shape policies that serve the country’s unique context and best interests.

Mr. Marape said this while acknowledging the dedication of research institutions in the country, which have continued to produce valuable data and information, despite funding constraints since independence. This data has been instrumental in guiding government policy decisions.

“I commend the work of research institutions across the country for their extensive, original research that supports effective policy decisions in both political and public service arenas. Institutions like the National Research Institute, Institute of Medical Research and our universities have contributed significantly to our development. It’s crucial that their data is fully utilized in government decision-making as we move forward, especially as we approach our 50th anniversary as a nation,” said Prime Minister Marape.

Mr. Marape also highlighted the importance of research in the policy making by the Government and relevant stakeholders.

“As outlined in our National Goals and Directive Principles, the policies we create must prioritise the welfare of our people and fit our national context. Whether in the extractive industries, non-resource sectors, or environmental and biodiversity management, our laws and policies must be informed by evidence and past lessons. “This Pangu-led Government is committed to ensuring the best outcomes for our people, avoiding the policy missteps of past administrations. We are fully dedicated to supporting our research institutions, including universities, through the Department of Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology, to drive high-quality, impactful research for a vibrant policymaking future,” Prime Minister Marape said.

The Prime Minister further stressed the importance of having reliable, homegrown research data, especially in an era of misinformation fueled by social media and technological risks.
