The Mt Hagen Bowling Club will host a competition this weekend. The teams that will take part in this weekend’s bowling competition are Defence and Metro bowling clubs in Port Moresby, Lae, Goroka, Bulolo and Madang and will see more than one hundred players, competing for the grand prize.
The Mt Hagen Bowling Club has the biggest number of ten teams that will be vying for the National titles.
Mondo Merchant Limited has been sponsoring this competition for the last 10 years and presented K10 000 for the competition.
“It is a good sport which involves different age groups. It also involves women and children. So we are proud to sponsor the game every year.”
says Mr Alois Upanga, Mondo Merchant Managing Director.
This competition is named after a local bowler, late Paul Akis, who dedicated his life to the game.
Mt Hagen Bowling Club President, Lukas Roika, said the club has represented PNG in many Commonwealth Games.
He himself has played in three Commonwealth Games, and has won medals.
“A lot of my bowlers have represented PNG. There are a lot of young players. Mt Hagen is one of those bowling clubs in PNG. Others are Goroka, Lae, Bulolo, Madang, and Defense and Metro in Port Moresby. We are small so we travel around PNG and compete every year.” says Mr Roika.
The club is training and producing raw talents from children to old people to play and have fun, and as a community service, keep youths out of trouble.
