Morobe Provincial Govt Gives Clothes To Families

By Martha Louis – EM TV News, Lae

The Morobe Provincial government has provided 30 bales of cloths to one of the two factions involved in fighting at the Boundary Road settlement.

The bales of clothes will go towards assisting those families whose homes were burnt during the clash last month.

The Boundary Road settlement, effective Tuesday, has a liquor ban imposed.

Morobe Governor, Kelly Naru, told the people gathered at the Sialum Compound that any one selling or drinking alcohol must be handed over to the police.

One of the main triggers for the fighting has been alcohol consumption.

The Provincial Peace and Order Committee passed a resolution on Friday to end the fighting.

The committee also came up with short and long-term measures on how best they can address the problem.

In the short term, the committee working with the Lae District had partnered with the different churches in the community.

Churches will carry out awareness programs to give assurance to the people. The committee at this time will not come up with any tough measures to impose on the community.

Governor Naru had also drawn attention to media reporting that has contributed to inflaming tensions.

“Media must be responsible in your reporting, the provincial government is trying to solve the problem and it would be irresponsibly for the media not to report facts.”

While the short term measures are in immediate effect.

In the long term, the provincial government is looking at creating proper land space for settlers to build their houses on.

The provincial government will also be bringing in water and electricity into the settlement area.
