The tendency of rural to urban drift, contributes to the dying of our rich cultural traditions.
This was the key message highlighted at the Milne Bay Provincial Day celebration in Madang.
Traditional practices easily erode as people adapt to a new environment that suits the way of living in that area.
A small but significant event, the Milne Bay Provincial day organized by the Divine Word University, and Madang Technical College students.
it was commemorated yesterday, with entertainments, speeches, traditional food and artifacts, paintings with all one aim, to Unite Milne Bay spirit in Madang Province and to appreciate past leaders’ efforts.
But a strong message came from a Milne Bay student, Donatus Sabadi, in relation to what happens our respective cultures once we step out of our home provinces.
“There is a way of recalling your roots so you don't forget no matter where you are, no matter who you're with, as long as you never lose yourself… there is this tendancy of moving away from your province and becoming like other people, so I beleive it is really important that you always remember your province.” Donatus Sabadi, Milne Bay student, Divine Word University.
Meanwhile, the DWU students Association is planning to do a roadshow at the end of this year to raise awareness on education.
Monies raised from the fundraising activity, with a major event, the Kula Night, held bi-annually.
An appeal to local MP’s to support them as Milne Bay’s human resources and assets.
