A new centre created in the Southern Highlands will look to address Family and Sexual Violence.
The centre was established through a partnership between the Southern Highlands Provincial Government, the Law and Justice Sector and the Australian Government.
Family and Sexual violence has been an on-going concern for the Southern Highlands province, one of the common challenges for Police in the province.
For both police and the provincial government, the establishment of this unit will go some way to addressing the issue in the region.
The different forms of family and sexual violence have also been a hindrance for development in the province.
The event coincided with the opening of the recently refurbished Family Sexual Violence Centre at the Mendi Hospital.
Southern Highlands Governor William Powi in his address says this latest development is a continuity of what his administration has been doing in supporting the law and justice sector in the province.
He says the base of development is family and therefore encouraged for more respect towards girls and mothers.
He says people should not demand development if there is no respect towards women.
Addressing Family and Sexual Violence is one of the major focuses of the Australian Governments’ Aid assistance towards PNG.
Its support towards addressing this issue in the province has also reached the health sector with the refurbishment of the centre at the Mendi Hospital.
