Mendi Airport Relocation Enters New Phase

By Michelle Amba – EM TV, Port Moresby

The preliminary design for the relocation of the Mendi Airport, to its new location, has been completed.

From its current location at the centre of Mendi, the airport will be moved 9km to the South in Lower Mendi, in Southern Highlands.

This project is one development nominated as a High Impact Project during the LNG Umbrella Benefit Sharing Agreement, between the State and landowners.

A feasibility study conducted by Cardno PNG Limited covered details of the Project Design, airport planning, and engineering cost estimation for the project.

The project was co-funded by the Imbongu district and the Southern Highlands Provincial Government four years ago.

Today, the report was handed over to Minister for Works and Implementation and Member for Imbongu, Francis Awesa.

Minister Awesa said the relocation aims to address two issues which are Safety operations and the free –up of land for economic development.

The next phase is for the assessment of design, survey, social mapping, land acquisition and site planning.

An expression of interest is called from players in the industry to undertake consultancy work to complete elements in the next phase.
