The Sir John Guise Stadium will host the first ever Melanesian Cup Championship between the winner of the Intercity Cup and Fiji’s Vodafone Cup competition on Saturday the 10th of October at 7pm.
Following in the footsteps of the World Club Challenge, contested by NRL and Super League clubs, the premiers of PNG and Fiji’s national leagues will now play off for a regional title.
The match will be held annually region which will promote and improve the respective national competitions, and give the local teams something extra to aim for.
Six clubs remain in the Digicel Cup, the Lae Snax Tigers, TNA Simbu Lions, Hela Wigmen, Agmark Rabaul Gurias, Mendi Muruks and Mount Hagen Eagles.
The winner will progress to the Melanesian Club Championship.
While in Fiji, 8 clubs are battling it out to win Fiji’s Vodafone Cup.
The competition has the potential of providing another pathway for elite local players to showcase their skills and talents on the international, and also enhance people to people relationships between the rugby league players and officials in both nations.
