Lihir Island in New Ireland Province is the first to carryout awareness on the Small Craft Act in PNG.
Lihir’s LLG Manager Robin Brown said the awareness is to ensure boat owners, operators, crew and the travelling public, are vested with safety measures before travelling out at sea.
The awareness is important as most people on the island use banana boats to travel between Lihir Island and Namatanai to access government services, do business or transport goods.
Mr Brown said over the years, fatal incidents have happened resulting in people dying at sea and were never found after having problems with their boats or during bad weather.
Stakeholders and other businesses on Lihir Island are behind this initiative to make people more informative before and when trying to use marine transportation.
The new act has come about as a result of the long felt concern by the government over accidents throughout PNG waters.
The awareness was staged at the Londolovit water front.
