Lae Police were out in full force for the New Year’s operations, covering all areas in the city, including sections of the Highway in the Miles and Situm Areas.
Lae Metropolitan Commander Chief Superintendent Anthony Wagambie Jr. said police units were deployed into their designated zones well before 12 am, causing a deterrent for potential troublemakers.
Suburban Police stations patrolled their areas whilst the Sector Response Unit (SRU) and a Mobile Squad (MS) 13 unit provided additional support.
Road checks were also conducted in partnership with the Traffic and Morobe Land Transport Board.
Mr. Wagambie also stated that the toll free number, 70903300 was well utilised by the public to report incidents.
There were a lot of arrests made however, New Year celebrations in Lae were generally peaceful.
Mr. Wagambie acknowledged the support given by communities through the neighborhood watch program, and commended his officers for ensuring that the New Year was celebrated peacefully.
