News remains the key to development, and Papua New Guinea must continue to invest in skills development and innovation.
President of the People’s Republic of India, Shri Pranab Mukherjee, made these remarks when addressing the University of Papua New Guinea (UPNG). His visit to UPNG followed the signing of an agreement in enhancing higher education learning in PNG.
Whilst at UPNG, President Mukherjee visited a statue of Mahatma Ghandi – a worldwide symbol of peace – who he said “continued to inspire the world through his teachings of equality, compassion and humility.”
President Mukherjee also offered India as a partner in developing the next generation of Papua New Guinea’s educated elite – urging Papua New Guineans planning on furthering their education to look towards India to achieve their education ambitions.
As part of this commitment, India is supporting the establishment of an Information Communication Technology Lab at UPNG’s Waigani campus. India will also be assisting in providing academic support in various science fields.
In addition, a regional institute for sustainable coastal and ocean research will be set up on Motupore Island, which is part of India’s commitment to the wider Pacific Region.
