Minister for National News, Nick Kuman, says the government will build five more polytechnic institutes throughout the country.
Kuman said this would cater for the increase in numbers relating to school dropouts.
He said this in a media conference in Port Moresby, while responding to questions regarding the government’s stance on increased school leaver numbers.
“There are limited spaces in tertiary institutions to cater for the school leavers coming out of tertiary and secondary schools every year,” he said.
With this in mind, the government is looking at various ways to accommodate these 75,000 dropouts.
He said in 2015, 23,000 students sat for national examinations and out of that, only 5,750 students were selected for further study at tertiary institutions.
The National News Minister said the government hopes to achieve its objective by enrolling 50 per cent of these school leavers in polytechnic institutions.
