Teperoi Primary, a remote school located along the coast of Wakunai District, Central Bougainville, will benefit from a infrastructure development package, thanks to the National Airports Corporation.
The project will be developed under a joint partnership program between the National Airports Corporation (NAC) and Teperoi Primary School.
The school was built near a lagoon and in recent times has been experiencing rising sea level threats.
Locals have raised the climatic change issue along the coastline with most of the waterfront and beaches already washed away.
A teaching staff member, Nigel Sareka, told EM TV News that classes are suspended because of the high tide and he fears the school is sinking fast and the children’s education might be disrupted.
Acting managing director, Joseph Tupiri, told EM TV News NAC will give support by relocating the school, and building new infrastructure. A new location has been identified at Tenakut Plantation in Wakunai.
The project includes design and construction of classrooms, teachers’ houses, water supply and playing fields, which costs up to K5 million.
As casualties of global warming, the community needs help and the NAC project is part of its community engagement to support less fortunate communities affected by global warming.
Fundraising activities will also be conducted to drive the initiative. Appeals have been made to corporate organisations to show their support.
