DISTRESSED WHALE WASHES ASHORE ON TANGA ISLANDS

A distressing scene has unfolded on the shores of the Tanga Islands in New Ireland where a large whale was discovered stranded on the Matansal reef in the Palinmon area of Ward One, Taonsip.

The whale, which was still alive when it first drifted onto the reef on Saturday, June 13, has since died, sparking urgent concerns regarding public health. Local residents and students from the nearby Taonsip Primary School gathered at the beach to witness the stranded marine giant

Observers at the site reported that the whale appeared to have been in extreme distress. Closer inspection revealed significant, fatal wounds around the creature’s head. According to local accounts, these injuries suggest the animal may have been attacked or struck with sharp implements while still at sea, which may have ultimately forced it toward the shore.

Community leader Lugu Tuangislut, along with his wife, Salome, expressed their deep concern over the whale’s prolonged suffering during its final hours.

As the carcass remains stuck on the reef, it has begun to decompose rapidly. The resulting strong, foul odor is now affecting the surrounding community. Local leaders have issued an urgent request to dispose of the remains immediately, likely by fire, to mitigate potential health hazards and environmental issues for the local population.
