by Dion Kombeng – EM TV Sport, Port Moresby

The Czech Republic made an impressive start to the Hopman Cup campaign defeating Australia’s Gold team in Perth Yesterday.

In the mens single match, Jiri Vesey walked over Leyton Hewitt in the opening match of their group A tier.

In the women’s singles, Karolina Pliskova from the Czech Republic, ranked number 11 in the world, defeated Australian Jarmila Wolfe 7-5 6-3.

Wolfe fought back in the match, but Pliskova took control of the second set and took the match, and the tie, with a blazing ace.

The players then played a mixed doubles match with the Czech Republic pair winning 6-2 7-5 for a 3-0 clean sweep.

The week-long Hopman Cup, always held in Perth, features two groups of four national teams, composed of a man and a woman, playing individual singles and then mixed doubles matches.
