Council Of Elders Push For People-Centred Policy

The National Government’s policy directives must always be centered on people, as customary landowners and beneficiaries to any development activity.

New Ireland Council of Elders Chairman, Sir Noel Levi, says these are ongoing issues resulting from lack of proper consultation by the National Government.

Using the back door to allow developers into Papua New Guinea is an issue that’s as real as it gets, in New Ireland Province.

New Ireland is a resource rich province, with two mines, Lihir and Simberi with Nautilus, as latest.

Sir Noel, in an interview with EMTV during the fifth Council of Elders Conference, said the National Government’s manner of allowing developers access to resources, without approaching the local people first, must stop.

This is one issue the New Ireland Council of Elders will collectively address and review, to ensure benefits are equally shared.

The Council of Elders focus is an approach to government policies implemented by the New Ireland Provincial Government, a check and balance methods concept, to ensure its working, and beneficial to the people.
