Catholic Church Health Services Unpaid

By Fabian Hakalits – EMTV, Port Moresby

Health workers employed by Catholic Church Health Services have not received their salaries since June, the organisation has reported.

They have spoke out against the slow release of funds from the government, which is now stopping the provision of vital services in man parts of the country.

National Secretary, Justine McMahon, told EMTV News that health workers have worked without pay for over two months because the national government has not released funds for salary and operational grants.

She has called on the government to meet its commitment to both the organization, and the people of PNG.

“There is an urgent need for the national government to release funds to churches to continue operating,” said Executive Director, Sr Tarsisia Hanhoff.

Like other church groups throughout the country, the Catholic church already highly subsidises health care services.

It recognises that their staff are professionals, with financial commitments who cannot afford to work without pay.
