Airline and airport security systems are now in question after a 27-year-old man managed to board the Air Niugini plane with live ammunitions, without being detected.
Though police managed to respond swiftly to apprehend the suspect inside the plane after security guards alerted them, the case poses a big security risk for the travelling public.
Arresting officer, Senior Constable Noki Minimbi, from the six mile police station, who arrested the man this afternoon, identified the suspect as Thomas Agoma, from Tari in Southern Highlands.
Senior Constable Minimbi said police will investigate how the man managed to get inside the plane without being detected by security scanners, and the guards at the terminal building entry point.
A total of 170 AR 15 rifle live bullets, and 20 shotgun rounds were confiscated.
The bullets were packed inside small chalk boxes, with security check labels on them.
Police have warned ammunition and firearms smugglers to think twice, stating the law will come down hard on them.
With several major international events on the Papua New Guinea national calendar, issues like smuggling, and the integrity of PNG customs systems, at PNG points of entry, are likely to be reassessed and strengthened.
