Boys at Work: Volunteers at FIBA Melanesia Basketball Cup

Time stopped, players waited and the crowd watched as a boy with a white Pepsi t-shirt ran into the basketball court with a towel, knelt down onto the floor and started wiping the floor.

While most schools were at holiday last week, a group of students volunteered to help out at the FIBA Melanesian Basketball competition in Port Moresby.

As the courts were getting busy with fans, spectators, officials and the game organisers, so too were two students from Eki Vaki Primary School among their volunteer group.

Meet Martin Ben in grade 6 and his school mate Frank in grade 4, who were helpers during the FIBA basketball competition.

When asked about their duties, Frank shyly stated in tok pisin explaining that when the players needed a water bottle, a towel or if the floor was wet it was their duty to attend to the call.

The event which ran for 4 days saw 4 national basketball teams from Solomon Islands, New Caledonia, Fiji and PNG battle for the 2017 FIBA Melanesian cup.
