Baby Sawong Kevin, the twin who survived complex separation surgery turned a year old on October 9. His first birthday comes after a year of hope, difficult decisions and the heartbreaking loss of his twin brother, Tom.

A year ago, two baby boys were born conjoined in Finschhafen, Morobe Province. Their story would go on to touch the hearts of people across Papua New Guinea and far beyond its borders.

The boys were born at Braun Memorial Hospital on October 9, 2025. Their condition required specialised medical care, beginning a journey that would eventually take them to Sydney, Australia, for a complex separation operation.

Before they left Papua New Guinea, the twins received care at Paradise Private Hospital in Port Moresby, where a dedicated team worked to keep them stable while arrangements were made for treatment overseas.

The hospital, led by Dr Robin Sios and his wife, Janet Sios, provided medical care, accommodation and support for the family without charge.

“We would rather know we tried than do nothing at all,” Mrs Sios said.

In December 2025, Australian specialists performed the operation to separate the twins. Sawong survived, but Tom passed following the surgery.

The loss brought heartbreak to a family that had travelled so far in the hope of saving both boys. It also touched many Papua New Guineans and people overseas who had followed their story and prayed for a positive outcome.

For Sawong’s parents, Kevin and Fetima, the journey was deeply personal. Behind the medical procedures, hospital transfers and public attention was a family facing the uncertainty of their sons’ future.

Sawong’s journey also showed what can happen when people and organisations come together to help a family facing an extraordinary medical challenge.

As Baby Sawong turns one, his first birthday is more than a celebration of another year of life. It is a moment to remember Tom, recognise the people who helped the family and reflect on a journey that touched a nation and reached far beyond it.
