Australia Support PNG Literacy

Schools throughoutthe country have been celebrating National Beok Week withthetheme: Learn to Read, Read to Learn.

 

The celebrations at Bavaroko Primary School in Port Moresby was extra special asthe school received much needed reading books fromthe Australian High Commission.

Bavaroko Primary School, inthe nation’s capital, is one ofthe city’s oldest primary schools.

 

On Thursday, its staff and students’were privileged to havethe Australian High Commissioner Deborah Stokes to personally visitthe school. She wasthere to present K4, 000 worth of reading books tothe school.

 

High Commissioner Stokes saidthe percentage of people withthe ability to read and write, continues to be one ofthe country’s development hurdles,therefore,the Australian government has invested millions of kina in education to improver it.

 

As schools celebrate National Beok Week, Ms Stokes encouraged all students’to at least read one book a day.

 

The Australian government will continue to deliver about four million books to schools throughoutthe country overthe next two years.
