Children’s Ward: Fall in Quality Patient Care

The Port Moresby General Hospital Pediatric ward caters for over two hundred patients.Inthe pediatric ward, there are 56 bed spaces, which are insufficient to cater for the increase in patient numbers.

Most of its patients are infants who come to seek much needed medical attention. Nurses atthe ward tirelessly strive to provide that. Bet with limited resources, quality patient care is sometimes ill-administered.

Staff atthe children’s ward raised this concern, sayingthey are struggling to deliver quality health services to patients with limited resources.

This has left many children deprived oftheir right to basic health care.

The nurses are frustrated thattheir plight has continuously fallen on deaf ears. They admit thatthe health care system is failing, andthe government must stop making empty promises.

PNG&#39’s high child mortality rate is far greater than any ther inthe Pacific region. In Papua New Guineaone child in every 13 will die beforethey reachthe age of five. Unless action is taken now, this trend could worsen.
