Melanesian Festival Generates Income

The fifth Melanesian Arts and Culture Festival is not just about showcasing and performing cultural and traditional activities but also an economic potential for participating provinces of Papua New Guinea and other Melanesian countries.

It’s an Economic Opportunity for many for many participants in the Fifth Melanesian Arts and Culture Festival, selling Artefacts to earn an income.

EMTV has visited some of the stalls at the festival village here in Port Moresby.

Thomas Nohune from the Autonomous Region of Bougainville is currently selling artefacts at the stall

Its an opportunity to sell and market Bougainville’s identity and heritage; like bows and arrows, baskets and necklaces.

At the Madang stall we caught up with Beverly Paul who said the festival is the realization of the Economic Aspect, which locally made artefacts attract both local and overseas tourists.

Featured at the Madang stall was the famous Madang Bilum from Karkar Island and their Claypot.

Security checks have been conducted at the main entrance with offensive weapons such as knives been removed and also betelnut not been allowed in the festival village.

This is to ensure visitors enjoy their stay here in the festival village.

The 11th of July will see the winding down of the Melanesian Festival.
