Lae Protest Tomorrow

Students from the University of Technology will be holding a rally tomorrow to call for the reinstatement of the Task Force Sweep and police officers who have been suspended.

SRC President, Eddie Nagual, said the rule of law and institutions tasked with upholding the law have to be respected by all including the Prime Minister.

Lae Police, meanwhile, have been put on alert ahead of tomorrow’s rally.

While Lae city has been relatively quiet, students at the University of Technology have been carrying out an awareness campaign over the last two days, to educate people about the current political tension in Port Moresby.

On Tuesday, dozens fanned out over Lae city with loud hailers.

Today, the student President announced that the rally will be held at Eriku Oval tomorrow for public opinion to be expressed.

Unitech is calling for the reinstatement of Task Force Sweep, Sam Koim, as well as other senior police officers, who have been suspended by the new commissioner.

Since the beginning of the year, the university has been in the spotlight for its successful non-violent protests, calling for the return of Dr Albert Schram. Their attentions have now shifted to this national issue.

Yesterday, Morobe Governor, Kelly Naru called for understanding. He said the prime minister shouldn’t be removed.

Lae police have given permission for the rally despite the concerns by the Lae Chamber of Commerce. Police say, they will shut down the rally if the protest gets out of hand.
