Eliptamin LLG in the Telefomin District will now have access to improved communication through the Digicel network.
Through the partnership arrangement with Telefomin District, and Digicel PNG, a communication tower will be erected soon. The service will benefit close to 40, 000 people in the remote area.
The presentation of K500, 000 to Digicel PNG’s Director of Government Business, Gary Seddon, means that Eliptamin LLG, one of the most geographically challenged LLG’s in the country, will now have access to improved communication.
Better still, people can now stop walking 2 to 3 hours, to the highest peak at Eliptamin, to make or receive calls.
Member for Telefomin, Solan Mirisim, said this is the first payment from the DSIP, for the first of the five communication towers, to be installed in the District by Digicel PNG.
District Administrator, Nemsin Kibisep, accompanied by Eliptamin Ward Councilor, Benny Remie, said the Administration was only implementing plans for improved communication and infrastructure, which are all captured in the District’s Five Year Development Plan.
As Telefomin is only accessible by air, the improved service will greatly benefit the people.
So far, Digicel PNG has spent K1.5 billion in PNG, which has seen the set-up of 800 communication towers throughout the country. Through a special arrangement with the government and Digicel PNG, each tower costs K1 million.
Sitting MP’s can connect their Districts to improved communication through a 50 – 50 arrangement.
Apart from improved communication, the people will also have access to internet and online libraries, and learning opportunities for schools in this remote part of Telefomin District.
