Papua New Guinea has a large area of tropical rain forest, but managing it is a problem.
However, with the support of the Japanese government through the Japanese International Cooperation Agency, it is now possible.
PNG Forest Authority now has a proper data base in place to map out forest cover for better forest management.
This forest monitoring project was funded by the Japanese Government, at a cost of over K20 million.
A nationwide study was carried out using state of the art technologies to map out forest cover.
Speaking during the closing ceremony of the project, PNGFA Managing Director, Kanawi Pouru, said the forest sector is the key to PNG’s development.
He said according to the 1979 Forest Policy, attention was given to nation building. However, he said forst sustainable management is a recent development and will help to address climate change.
Japanese Embassy First Secretary, Yoshiki Takahama, said this is in line with the United Nations Framework on Climate Change in implementing REDD+ programs in reducing emissions to address climate change.
JICA Chief Representative, Shigeru Sugiyama, said PNG was blessed with vast rain forest and biodiversity but it’s sad that we have to endure deforestation and forest degradation.
Mr Sugiyama said they are assisting Papua New Guineans in capacity building in managing forest effectively to help address climate change.
