The absence of a liquor licensing board in Jiwaka, is contributing to law and order problems in the province.

As the Provincial Police Commander of the new province, Joseph Tondop is tasked to maintain law and order in Jiwaka. With this responsibility comes challenges, says PPC Tondop.
Tondop says there has been a general break down in law and order due to the absence of a liquor licensing board and the widespread consumption of marijuana and homebrew.
However, a major campaign against the use of drugs and homebrew, is seeing positive results.
The PPC says there needs to be a review on all liquor trading licenses in the province, to ensure that trading locations are appropriate for the public.
Another challenge is the shortage of man power. At present there are only 60 police men and women. In his view, this is not sufficient enough. As a result of this, Tondop says there is little or no police presence in Jimi and Kambia .
He has made a request to headquarters for an increase in numbers but there is a huge problem with accommodation for those already on the ground.
In his long term plan, the member for North Waghi, and Defence Minister, Dr. Fabian Pok has committed to build 17 new houses for police in the province.
PPC Tondop also has plans to set up a new Task Force to be on hand, when there is a need. The PPC believes the province is still in its infant stage, and all systems are not in place to assist police operations in the province.
