AUSTRALIA’S NEW HIGH COMMISSIONER TO PNG

His Excellency Jamie Isbister has formally presented his letter of introduction to Prime Minister, James Marape, formally taking up his role as Australia’s High Commissioner to Papua New Guinea.
“It is a great privilege to take up this role at such an important time in the relationship between Australia and Papua New Guinea,” High Commissioner Isbister said. “Our countries share an extraordinary relationship, built on our history, our geography and, most importantly, the deep connections between our people. Our Pukpuk Alliance reflects the trust between our countries and our shared commitment to a peaceful, stable and prosperous region.”
For High Commissioner Isbister, the appointment is also a personal homecoming. His first memories are of Port Moresby, where his father worked as a doctor at Port Moresby General Hospital, and his family’s connection to Papua New Guinea spans three generations.
“I am honoured to have the opportunity to represent Australia here and to contribute to the next chapter of our partnership as close neighbours, friends and allies.”
“Prime Minister Marape and I discussed the importance of building the next generation of PNG and Australia people-to-people connections through sport, labour mobility, volunteers, business and churches.”
High Commissioner Isbister has more than 30 years’ experience in foreign, humanitarian and development policy. He was most recently a Deputy Secretary in the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade and has previously served as Australia’s Ambassador for the Environment, the Australian Government’s Humanitarian Coordinator and Minister-Counsellor (Development) in Africa.
He also brings significant experience working on the Australia-Papua New Guinea relationship, including as Australia’s lead negotiator with the Australian Rugby League Commission on the PNG Chiefs’ entry into the NRL.
The Australia-Papua New Guinea relationship is at a historic high point, with the Pukpuk Alliance providing a new foundation for Australia and Papua New Guinea to work together to advance our shared security and prosperity.
High Commissioner Isbister succeeds Ewen McDonald AM as Australia’s High Commissioner to Papua New Guinea.
