Authorization for the government to occupy land designated for multi-billion kina Oil Palm Project at Urimo, in the Yangoru Saussia district of East Sepik, has been granted.
Department of Trade, Commerce and Industry Secretary, John Andrias officially received the Certificate of Authorization of Occupancy, today.
The certificate gives the state to utilize over 10,000 hectares of land which used to be the old Government-owned Urimo Cattle Ranch.
Receiving the CAO on behalf of the Minister, the Secretary of the Department of Trade, Commerce and Industry, John Andrias, thanked the National Government through the Department of Lands and Physical Planning for recognizing the importance of the multi-billion kina project.
The total land area needed for this project is marked at 100 000 hectares.
The first 10 000 hectares ready for the project was given the green light today upon the presentation of the CAO.
The 10 000 hectares of land was previously owned by the Department of Lands and Livestock, who agreed to release the land to the department for the project.
Presenting the CAO, Secretary for Lands and Physical planning, Romily Kilapat advised the department to include local landowners, especially in awareness, and engage them in the project.
The National Government will own 30% of the project, while 70% will be owned by other investors which include the people of East Sepik Province and Papua New Guinea.
The project will involve landowners in the Yangoru- Saussia district including Angoram, Maprik and Wosera-Gawi.
