Fire Service Team To Investigate Fires In Lae & Mt Hagen

A team of fire investigators from the PNG Fire Headquarters in Port Moresby have been dispatched to assess fires in Mt Hagen and Lae.

Chief Fire Officer Isaac Silas says an assessment of the cause of fire and a report on damage done would be compiled and presented to government and other stakeholders.

He added that the PNG Fire Service were struggling in their operations and the onus was on the national government to adequately respond to the department’s plight.

The Fire Service Department has again come under the spotlight, as properties were damaged in Mt Hagen over past weeks, including a death in Lae recently.

This has placed extreme pressure on the department’s capability in battling fires and saving thousands or even millions for businesses or individuals.

In an interview with EM TV yesterday, Chief Fire Officer Isaac Silas said it is unfortunate to see proprieties being damaged, but the department is going through what he describes as its darkest days to withstand fire occurrences.

Silas added that a submission is before the Inter Government Relations Department to consider and rescue the fire service.

The Chief Fire Officer says change and improvement in services won’t happen overnight for the department.

Mr Silas has condemned the public attack on his firemen in Port Moresby and has called upon the public to work with them in providing this vital service.
