The increased bus fare from 50t to K1 or K1 to K2 by bus nine operators every afternoon in Port Moresby is becoming a norm.
The increase every afternoon has become a common occurrence. For passengers travelling to Gerehu or Waigani from Four Mile, it is extra expenditure.
An angry Gerehu resident described the operators’ actions as illegal and demanded that police officers be present at bus stops in the afternoon to monitor such activity.
Michael Taiya said this illegal exercise has continued for a long time.
“Even bus 15 and 11 operators pick up Gerehu and Waigani residents and charge a fee of K1 when taking passengers to Waigani and K2 when taking Gerehu residents to Gerehu,” said Taiya.
Bus nine operator Peter Hatai said bus operators do that to get fast money.
“We take short cuts because of traffic jams,” he said.
Hatai further said bus operators make more money when they take short cuts. Meanwhile, residents from town and Kanudi have also raised similar concerns over bus operators making incomplete routes and charging double fees, especially in the afternoons.
