A recent audit has discovered that funds intended for Tuition Fee Free policy have been mismanaged.
This has prompted the Education Minister, Nick Kuman, to issue a directive for the department to take drastic measures to correct this trend in all schools.
Minister Kuman told parliament today, that all district and provincial treasurers will be signatories to school accounts for transparency and accountability.
Minister for Education, Nick Kuman, when responding to a question raised by member for Gazelle, Malakai Tabar, told parliament that there is no proper management of the funds under the tuition fee free policy.
He said a random check on the performance of school accounts have shown that there is a management issue that needs to be addressed. The member for Gazelle questioned why some schools in his electorate have not received the first payment of the tuition fee free funds.
Minister Kuman responded saying there are a number of factors that have affected the disbursement of funds to some schools. One being the school’s failure to submit acquittals for 2013, outdated school census information and the change of signatures.
Those monies that have not been channelled are kept in a holding trust account, the Minister told parliament. The minister also informed parliament that he will be delivering a ministerial statement on the matter to present to parliament.
He confirmed that the first K300 million of the tuition fee free funds, has been released by Treasury and further channelled to schools that have met all the requirements.
