Koiari Land Issues

LLG Councilors of the Koiari Local Level Government will soon introduce a law to protect illegal land–grabbing along the Sogeri Road Corridor.

The Councilors raised a concern that as Port Moresby was full, many city dwellers were infringing on their land, and developments were taking place without proper consent.

After 30 years, they are taking a stand to put a stop to illegal land grabbing. The Ward Councilors, led by Koiari LLG President, Ogi David, visited EMTV Studio to make their stand clear, and that was to stop all illegal land deals on their land.

As Port Moresby city was already full, many city dwellers have opted to reside along the Sogeri road, including many developments. They want to put a stop to any illegal land deals and properly coordinate all land deals through the Central Provincial Lands Office located at Konedobu.

The Koiari LLG has resolved that a community land resolution team will be set-up to deal with all land issues. On top of this, they will draft a legislation to stop land– grabbing. One issue highlighted included the need to introduce the Vagrancy Act in the country, to monitor and control the number of people moving in and out of Port Moresby.

They will convene a special meeting next week to draft a framework for the legislation, to stop illegal land deals, and to ensure the people of Koiari benefit from development spin-offs on their land.
