PNG Cancer Foundation Ambassador and First Lady, Lynda Babao, was at Hanuabada in Port Moresby recently, to promote cancer awareness and thanked the local community in participating in the Foundation’s Biggest Morning Tea program.
Since its inception in April this year, the Foundation through this program, has gained participation from various corporate houses.
But for the first time, this initiative was felt at the grassroots level with a local community from Hanuabada, taking part in it last weekend.
Hanuabada village was caught by surprise when the First Lady made an unannounced visit to attend the Biggest Morning Tea facilitated by the Poreporena Womens Group recently.
Mrs Babao mingled with the women and children, and discussed health concerns in the country, especially, issues with mouth cancer and what can be done to reduce the effects and risks for themselves, and their families.
Organizer from the Womens Group, Catherine Igua, was humbled by the presence of the First Lady, but stressed that more cancer awareness was required within villagers and rural communities.
Chief Executive Officer of PNG Cancer Foundation, Dadi Toka Jnr, said the concept of the program is not solely for the corporate community, but equally for the whole community regardless of location and status.
The Womens Group also saw the donation of fresh vegetables from the 9mile Agro-Farm, ISRPNG – which goes hand in hand with the Foundation’s push for healthier lifestyles.
Towards 2010, the statistics of mouth cancer in PNG accumulated to 12.4% of all cancer admissions which signified an alarmingly growing trend of this disease; many of these cases were attributed to the frequent habit of betelnut chewing at a young age.
