New Ireland and East New Britain get ICT programs

by Delly Bagu – EM TV, Port Moresby

The people of Namatanai in New Ireland and Gazelle in East New Britain will have access to the latest ICT technology.

This comes after an agreement was signed to establish a technology vocational centre in New Ireland Province.

This will pave the way for the ICT vocational centres to offer high standard, accredited qualifications to grade 12 students who missed out on university placing.

The government, through the Ministry of Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology has agreed to see universities across PNG explore opportunities to deliver country wide ‘open campus’ programmes.

The signing took place between Minister Malakai Tabar and the network provider, with Mining Minister Byron Chan as a witness in Kingston, Jamaica. Minister Tabar will be implementing an education e-learning programme in his district, focusing on secondary schools.

He would like to provide students with the best possible resources and is assisting in their preparations for tertiary education.

Among other elements, the Minister will provide tablet e-library facilities, ICT vocational learning and ‘open campus’ tertiary connectivity.

Minister Tabar’s commitment is equivalent to K2 million and will see four communication towers erected at Lasul Station, Malasaet, Open Bay and Vunalir.
